Text Box: The training had a great turn out with people representing from Wolf Point, Box Elder, and various departments from the Fort Belknap tribe. This training provided a great deal of information to all that participated in the “Healthy Home Training.”
Text Box: On February 18-19, 2009 MSU Extension Housing & Environmental Dept. hosted a “Healthy Home Training” at the Fort Belknap Casino. The training was presented by Mike Vogel, MSU Housing & Environmental Quality Specialist and he was the presenter for both days of the training. This training was open to all tribal departments and interested community members that wished to attend. The first day of the training included information on how to Text Box: conduct home assessments and provided participants with materials to conduct local assessments and outreach programs dealing with: moisture & mold, septic systems, indoor air quality, combustion appliance efficiency & safety, drinking water quality and treatment, and lead-based paint. The second session covered topics on household hazardous waste and Meth in Indian Country.

Text Box: Environmental Compliance Program
Text Box: Winter is still here but I have been busy researching and learning as much as I can to perform Compliance and Enforcement related tasks. I have been putting together an Environmental Training Plan that deals with the hazards of Asbestos, Lead Based Paint, Underground Storage Tanks, and Risk Assessor Training.

I have been actively involved with other tribal response programs, on how to develop Environmental Codes and Ordinances, which will
protect our community,

Text Box: from commercial and industrial development,
including how to properly conduct inspections.

Some literature you may find useful is a book I have been reading called, Energy for Sustainability. It was recently published in 2008, and it has great examples of energy usage and “is based on the premise that our current patterns of energy, are not sustainable”, and the time to act is now, to educate and teach our younger generation how to

Text Box: develop significant improvements in “efficiency of use and
increased development of renewable energy systems”. We are already witnessing the symptoms of Climate Change and how we exploited past energy usage is the cause, using poorly inefficient machines that depend on petroleum based fuels. Carbon emissions from fossil fuels is the main reason we are in a Global Climate Change, “which at last estimate, was at 86%, dependence on fossil fuels”. “The most recent example is how petroleum (oil) peaked and reached its climax in 2008”, you can understand this by the high cost of gasoline last year.
