What is a Brownfields Site?
EPA's definition of a "Brownfields" is real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. Basically, a "Brownfields" site is any property such as land or an abandoned building that sits idle and unused because of perceived contamination or actual contamination existing on the site. "Brownfields" sites can include some of the following:
  • Abandoned Warehouses
  • Abandoned Industrial Buildings
  • Old Buildings/Factories
  • Mine Scarred Lands
  • Landfills
  • Open Dumps
  • Meth Labs
  • Gas Stations
  • Underground Storage Tanks
What is not a Brownfields Site?
  • A site listed on the National Priorities List (NPL) by the EPA.
  • A site that you are liable for and that you are using as an open dump.
  • Site where a removal action by another organization or agency has or is occurring.
